Skylight Calendar in the UK: is a screen on the wall worth it?

What the Skylight Calendar is, what it costs in the UK once the subscription is added, what it does well, what it cannot do, and who it suits.

Skylight makes a touchscreen for the kitchen wall or the hall that shows the family's calendar, chores and meals. The idea is old: the paper calendar by the fridge. The execution is modern: it pulls from Google, Apple and Outlook calendars, colour codes each person, and shows a week or a month at a glance. Families who respond to a physical calendar love it. Here is the honest picture for a UK household.

What it costs

The 10-inch model is $159 and the 15-inch $299; the 27-inch is more. Skylight Plus is $79 a year and unlocks the meal planner, chores and rewards, photo screensaver, and the magic import that reads a forwarded email into an event. UK prices follow the exchange rate plus VAT and delivery. Budget around £200 to £300 for the screen plus £65 a year.

What it does well

  • Being seen. A screen on the wall is looked at by everyone, including the person who never opens the calendar app. This is the whole case for it.
  • Colour per person, week and month views, and a "today" strip that is genuinely readable across the kitchen.
  • Calendars from anywhere: Google, Apple, Outlook, and Skylight's own app for adding on the go.
  • Chores and rewards for children who like ticking things off on a screen.

What it cannot do

  • Read the school's letters. The magic import on Plus reads an email you forward, but it does not know what a school is, which child it is for, or that the money is due before the trip. It is a paste-and-hope.
  • Be asked a question. No "what's on Thursday?" from the car.
  • Come with you. It is on the wall; the phone app is basic.
  • Handle WhatsApp, photos of paper letters, or voice notes.

Who it suits

A family that already keeps a decent Google or Apple calendar and wants it visible in the kitchen; a household with a person who will not look at a phone calendar; children old enough to use chores on a screen. It is a display for a calendar you already keep well.

Who it does not

A family whose problem is that the dates never get into the calendar in the first place. For that, a letter reader fixes the cause; a screen shows the gap more clearly. The two can be combined: a reader that feeds Google, and Skylight showing Google.

Questions people ask

Does Skylight work in the UK?
Yes; it ships to the UK and shows UK dates and times. Support and pricing are American, so expect dollars and US-shaped features.
Do I need the subscription?
The screen works as a calendar display without it. Skylight Plus, about $79 a year, adds the meal planner, chores, the magic import that reads emails, and photos. Most of the reasons to buy it are behind Plus.
Does it replace the apps on our phones?
No. It shows what is in the calendar you connect (Google, Apple, Outlook) or in Skylight's own app. Everyone still needs a phone app to add things when out.
