Adding the children

First names and year groups are all Bobbie needs to file a letter under the right child. Emoji, colour and a photo are yours to add, and none of it is required.

The short version. Settings, Family, Add a child. First name, year group, school if you know it. Save. Emoji and colour are for telling the children apart on screen; a photo is optional.

The Children card in Settings: each child with a name, a year group, a row of emoji to choose from, a row of colours, a photo button, and a WhatsApp section.
Each child gets a name, a year, a look, and their own WhatsApp section for later.

Adding a child

  1. Open the menu (the round button at the top right), then Settings, then Family.
  2. Press Add a child.
  3. Type their first name and pick a year group. Nursery, Reception, Year 1 up to Year 13 are all there.
  4. Pick an emoji and a colour if you like. They are how the child shows on the calendar and in lists.
  5. Press Save.

You can add as many children as you have. Each one can have a different school.

Why this is enough

A school letter says "Year 3 trip" or "Oak class swim on Thursdays". Bobbie reads the year group and class from the letter and files the item under the child in that year. If two children are in the same year, the class name settles it, and if it cannot tell, it files the item under both and you fix it with one tap in the Inbox.

Nothing else about a child is needed. No date of birth, no surname, no address. The less there is, the less there is to keep safe.

Changing things later

Everything on the child's card can be changed at any time from Settings, Family: name, year group (do this each September), emoji, colour, photo. Removing a child keeps their past items on the calendar but takes them off the household.

What is really happening

Children in Bobbie are labels for filing, not accounts. They cannot sign in, they have no email, and they see nothing unless a parent links their phone and switches on replies, which is a separate, deliberate step. See linking a child's phone.

Questions people ask

Why only a first name and year group?
Because that is what a school letter says. Bobbie matches 'Year 3 trip' and 'Oak class' to the right child from the year group and class; a surname or date of birth would not help and would be more of yours to keep safe.
What about a child at a different school?
Each child has their own school. Set it when you add them, and Bobbie will recognise that school's emails for that child.
Can I add a photo of my child?
You can, from Settings, Family. Photos are stored privately, shown only to people in your household, and deleted with the account. Nobody outside the household can ever reach them.
